What Is the Omegaverse? A Beginner’s Guide to A/B/O Dynamics
If you have seen the words Alpha, Beta, and Omega all over your feed and wondered what everyone is talking about, this guide is for you. The omegaverse — also written as A/B/O dynamics — is a fictional world-building concept that started in fandom and grew into one of the internet’s most popular story settings.
The short version
In omegaverse stories, people have a “secondary dynamic” alongside their regular identity: they are an Alpha, a Beta, or an Omega. Think of it like a fictional personality system inspired by wolf-pack imagery. Alphas are written as natural leaders, Betas as the steady middle ground, and Omegas as intuitive and comfort-oriented. The fun of the genre is watching how characters with different dynamics clash, cooperate, and find their place in a pack.
Where did it come from?
The concept grew out of fan fiction communities in the early 2010s and spread across fandoms, then across platforms — from archive sites to Wattpad, and eventually to TikTok, where quizzes asking “are you an Alpha, Beta, or Omega?” became a recurring viral trend. Today the terminology shows up in webcomics, novels, and everyday fandom slang, and many readers first meet it through translated comics and web novels.
The three dynamics at a glance
- Alpha — decisive, protective, drawn to leadership. Full Alpha guide.
- Beta — balanced, dependable, the pack’s stabilizer. Full Beta guide.
- Omega — perceptive, nurturing, sanctuary-builders. Full Omega guide.
Fans have also invented rarer designations over the years — the best known is the Enigma, an unreadable wildcard type that has become hugely popular in quizzes.
Why do people love it?
The same reason people love sorting themselves into houses, signs, or personality types: it is a fast, playful language for talking about who you are in a group. Are you the one who takes charge? The one who keeps the peace? The one everyone comes to for comfort? Omegaverse gives those instincts fun names and a whole fictional world to play in.
